Review: "How Not to Die"

Dr. Michael Greger of www.Nutritionfacts.org has released his first book, How Not to Die:  Discover the Foods Scientifically Proven to Prevent and Reverse Disease.  It is an encyclopedic power-house!

Dr. Greger explains how his grandmother’s death inspired him to search for answers on how to revers and cure disease.

In the first parts of the book, he answers “how not to die” from fifteen different killers, including heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, several cancers, and doctors!  In these two hundred and fifty ages, he looks at countless medical studies and concludes that a whole foods plant based diet is the best for all disease – and he gives specific direction and encouragement for people with specific illnesses.

The second part of the book, and the next one hundred and fifty pages, address the twelve things – and their proportions – that he believes maximizes health in a person’s diet.  Those being:  beans, berries, other fruit, cruciferous vegetables, greens, other vegetables, flaxseeds, nuts and seeds, herbs and spices, whole grains, beverages, and exercise.

The book ends with one hundred and fifty pages of endnotes referencing the supporting medical literature.

The idea that a whole foods plant based died is a better diet to observe was not new to me, but the amount of medical literature that the author references was – too often “health” books do not take advantage of supportive medical literature.

This book is engaging, supporting, and has much guidance for anyone who wants to be healthier, and especially if one has a specific medical concern.  It should be a medical and lifestyle reference in every home.
