Dear
Members and Friends of Second Reformed Church,
I am writing you as we prepare to
remember that everything we have is God’s – this Sunday being Stewardship
Sunday.
With Thanksgiving this coming week,
we find ourselves willing to share with others.
To cook and share food with our family and select friends. Even though Aunt Samantha puts way too much
butter in the sweet potatoes and Sal has never met a Turkey he couldn’t turn
into shoe leather.
It is a time of love…so long as we
don’t remind Bob about his recent divorce – he’ll start crying and water down
the cranberry sauce. Though it probably
came out of a can anyway.
All the diabetics in the family will
be making their best pies – pumpkin, mincemeat, and pecan – especially the pecan. The trick is always in getting a piece before
they inhale it all.
Does this sound at all familiar?
Let me challenge you to do two
things – don’t worry – it will benefit you:
First, go to worship each Sunday
with Christ’s Bride, because He is worthy of worship and thanksgiving and you
will receive His grace through the Word and Sacraments and grow in the presence
of His people.
Second, write someone a handwritten
note – not an e-mail – write someone a note and tell him or her why you are
thankful for him or her. Repeat this
periodically. Make yourself a schedule. Would it not be meaningful to you to have
someone tell you why your existence is of value? Might it make you thankful for others, as
well?
I hope you all have a safe and happy
Thanksgiving.
In His Service,
Rev. Dr. Peter A. Butler, Jr., Pastor
Second Reformed Church
