Two Boys Kissing by David Levithan is not a book to be judged by its title.
This is the story of two young men – ex-boyfriends – who
decide to break the Guinness World Record for the length of a kiss – over
thirty hours. The author explains in the
afterward that his novel is based on the true story of two college student who
break the world’s record.
The novel is about relationships and who will be there
for you in the end. It features the
couple who are no longer involved, a new couple, and a couple who have been
together for some time, but the focus of the book is not sexuality. I emphasize this because some will bristle
seeing a review such as this on my channel.
There are many types of people in the world – good novels deal with all
of them.
In my reading of the book, the key to its story is found
near the end where the author writes, “It’s one of the secrets of
strength: We’re so much more likely to
find it in the service of others than we are to find it in service to
ourselves” (153).
I think that’s a great message.
